Mel is the founder of Posh Cycling and Fitness, a fitness studio located in College Park, Maryland. She has been a fitness instructor for over a decade, and has dreamed of starting her own chain of fitness studios for years. In 2018, she finally opened her first studio, which has since held hundreds of fitness classes, as well as many community-wide events. Due to COVID-19, the studio is currently closed, which makes work especially challenging for the staff at Posh. However, they continue to host online classes and are accepting donations on their website.

Interview highlights:

“As a small business owner, it’s kind of frustrating that they say they have these resources out there for us but it’s not really going—for us, you know, like, the big franchises have been getting all the money, you know, and a lot of people have not gotten anything… and so it’s really concerning. Yeah. Like I said, it’s rewarding to have your small business, but at the same time, you don’t know what’s gonna happen. Especially in my kind of field, that, I just… don’t know. I don’t know if I’m gonna survive, to be honest, yeah.”

“And you know we put in all this work and to just, to… crumble… would suck. […] Yeah, it’s not just a business for me, it was my dream. You know, It’s something I thought about not for a year, it was years in the making…”
